The definitive--and by far the most popular--guide to the therapeutic Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or the art and science of how trees can promote health and happiness Notice how a tree sways in the wind. Run your hands over its bark. Take in its citrusy scent. As a society we suffer from nature deficit disorder, but studies have shown that spending mindful, intentional time around trees--what the Japanese call shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing--can promote health and happiness. In this beautiful book--featuring more than 100 color photographs from forests around the world, including the forest therapy trails that criss-cross Japan--Dr. Qing Li, the world's foremost expert in forest medicine, shows how forest bathing can reduce your stress levels and blood pressure, strengthen your immune and cardiovascular systems, boost your energy, mood, creativity, and concentration, and even help you lose weight and live longer. Once you've discovered the healing power of trees, you can lose yourself in the beauty of your surroundings, leave everyday stress behind, and reach a place of greater calm and wellness. Review: Interesting Read - I really enjoyed this unique book by a Japanese physician. It opened my mind to a lot of information about the importance of trees and forests for health and mental well being. It was an interesting and easy read, something that anyone could find beneficial, but especially lovers of nature. It was especially interesting how the Japanese have incorporated forest bathing into their lives, even though most of the population lives in crowded cities. The description of the parks in Japan as well as beautiful photos was fascinating and something I did not know existed in Japan. The author makes a good case that many woes such as anxiety, depression, stress and even illnesses could be alleviated with regular contact amongst trees and nature. Too many of us are stuck inside with our focus on electronic devices such as computers, Loads and cell phones. There are lots of tips here on how to benefit from a walk in the woods. I recommend this book, perhaps it will change how you see the natural world, I hope to incorporate these lessons in my life. Review: Great Textbook - High Quality Information - Very fast read on a cozy rainy night. I love the feelings I get from this book. I read it when Im traveling in my motorhome.

Get this book
Honestly, it's a great book and one of the best reads that I've picked up in a while. It starts off a bit slow, but after the first few pages, the information is really intriguing. The author talks mostly about how nature can help reduce anxiety and explains that there are a lot of forest bathing centers set up now in Japan. Not only that, but he also mentions the importance of urban green spaces in cities and urban areas. The benefits of essential oils are addressed and how using them in the winter when we are less able to get out can benefit our mood and health; truly a lot of information in this book. If you are into nature definitely get this book.

Good book
I really enjoyed this book a lot of what it stated I knew without knowing. Being raised in an outdoor family I've always felt much of Doctor Li describes. I do see a gap In my grandchildren's appreciation for the outdoors. I hope as they get older I can help them gain the appreciation that I have.

MUST READ best text on the topic
This book was a recommendation by my teacher while I was taking a course for Sylvotherapy to become a Sylvotherapist. This is by far the best text for the path of Sylvotherapy (Forest Bathing/Forest Therapy). This is a must read for anyone who loves nature, Mother Earth, spiritual paths and Sylvotherapy interests. Easy to read and understand. The author is highly respected and knowledgeable being the pioneer who grounded Sylvotherapy practices into modern day medicine. This is a MUST HAVE in your library in nature based practices.

Beautiful book but... meh?
Aesthetically gorgeous but light content. A nice coffee-table style treatise on Japan and Japanese forests, with somewhat practical advice for the WHY you should incorporate forest-bathing in your life, but not a whole of pith on the HOW part. Also, page 17 states that the name "sugi" for Japanese cedar comes from the Japanese words "mallugu-ki" which is the saddest and most pathetic proofreading excuse I have ever seen in a book about Japan. Do they not have knowledgeable fact-checkers familiar with the country go over this before printing? Come on!!! Penguin is a respectable publisher; do respectable work please. I hope this is corrected in future printings, if indeed any are run.
