Since Alberta was raised in an Italian family, her her called her Albertina as a little girl. The vineyards and winery are family owned and operated. All Albertina’s wines are estate bottled, made with grapes from our own 17 acre ain vineyards in Hopland, CA . The thin ain soils (only 5 to 6 feet deep) force the vines to struggle, producing small berries with intense flavors and color. The vineyards are sustainably farmed, caring for the soil with natural fertilizers such as clovers and compost, and never using pesticides. The vines are watered in the summer with a gravity fed drip irrigation system that uses no electricity. The trelllis system used is the VSP (vertical shoot position) which employs sets of wires to keep the shoots (canes) vertical so they do not shade the fruit. Austrailian research showed that wines made from grapes that ripened in the sun made much better wine than if the grapes ripened in the shade. The grapes are hand picked by brix and taste, when ripe. Fermented till dry, the must is then pressed gently, and the wine stored in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for 24 to 28 months. Penny Gadd Coster is our winemaker. She made Jordan’s Cabernet for 13 years, then made wine for Judy Jordan at J Wines for 7 years. Albertina’s wines are made in a fruit-forward style, emphasizing the fruit tastes, such as berries, currants and ripe plums while offering soft and subtle tannins to provide a long finish. Our wines almost always win Gold and Silver Medals. "I am fortunate to start out with terrific Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot grapes from the Zmarzly Family Estate Vineyards.
